Kyushu Trip - 2
(Unzen ~ Miyazaki)

Halfway up the never-ending, winding road to the Unzen hot spring mountain resort.

Plumbers must have a lucrative career at the Unzen hot springs because they pipe all the natural water directly into the hotel's swank pools.

These baby bamboo shoots I harvested at the Tokunaga farm are delicious in a steaming bowl of miso soup.

The stately castle perch above Kumamoto keeps a watchful eye on the city.

The city of Kumamoto is the birthplace of the obscure sport that involves swimming while wearing a full set of samurai armor!

The manicured garden of Suizenji in the city of Kumamoto is famous for it's miniature Mt. Fuji.

This cow peacefully grazes in the world's largest volcanic caldera, Mt. Aso.

The emerald water and gentle breeze flowing through Takachiho Gorge relaxed my soul after a tough bike ride out of the Mt. Aso caldera.

These clay dolls are called "haniwa" and were often found in the tombs of ancient Japanese royalty. Here they strike a pose in a garden in the city of Miyazaki.
